ABOUT US

In 1853, after the death of Raja Gangadhar Rao, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi faced both personal and political loss. With her kingdom under threat and the British East India Company demanding tribute, she had no choice but to part with much of her gold and jewelry.

From the remnants of her wealth, she summoned the kingdom’s artisans to craft pieces that were minimal, functional, and bold enough to be worn in battle, reflecting her courage and resilience. Among them, one visionary artisan drew inspiration from the myth of Matsya and Manu, the divine fish who carried humanity through the great flood. Using motifs inspired by fish scales, flowing water, and fluidity, he created jewellery that symbolized resilience, survival, and subtle majesty.

Rani Lakshmibai admired his creations and commissioned him exclusively, marking the birth of ‘Matsya’ a brand where heritage, minimalism, and strength intersect in jewellery design.
